The amount of hemoglobin in the blood varies from condition to condition. Sometimes high, sometimes low, sometimes normal. The amount of hemoglobin in our blood is high or low, no label is good. It is best if it is on the normal label all the time.
Hemoglobin is basically an iron-rich protein that resides in blood cells. When oxygen enters the lungs, which is closely related to hemoglobin, this hemoglobin works to deliver oxygen to various tissues in the body. Learn more about what hemoglobin is and how hemoglobin works in our body.
When a person is deficient in hemoglobin or white blood cells, the body lacks the oxygen it needs to perform its normal functions. Therefore, it is important that the level of hemoglobin in the blood is normal. More or less, neither is good for the body.
Let’s have a detailed idea about the different amounts of hemoglobin in our blood. Before that, of course, we need to know how hemoglobin levels are measured. Then the next discussion means it will be easier to understand the level of hemoglobin.
The amount of hemoglobin in the blood
We need to do a blood test to find out how much hemoglobin is in our blood and on what label. Hemoglobin or HBK for short is measured in grams, per deciliter. Low levels of hemoglobin in the blood are considered as low levels of direct oxygen.
If a blood test shows that the hemoglobin level in an adult male is less than 13.5 deciliters, it is assumed that he has anemia. And in the case of adult women, anemia is detected when the hemoglobin in the blood is less than 12 deciliters. Children vary by age.
Normal label of hemoglobin
Normal levels of hemoglobin usually depend on age. Medical science also determines the amount of normal hemoglobin for the human body based on age and sex. However, below is the normal level of hemoglobin-
- Newly born human child – 18 to 22 deciliters
- One week old baby – 15 to 20 deciliters
- One month old baby – 11 to 15 deciliters
- Adult males – 14 to 18 deciliters
- Adult females – 12 to 18 deciliters
- Middle-aged men – 12.4 to 14.9 deciliters
- Middle-aged women – 11.6 to 13.6 deciliters
The above mentioned hemoglobin levels may be slightly higher or lower based on laboratory tests, no matter what. But if the level of hemoglobin in the human body is much lower or higher than this normal range, then it is a big deal. Especially in the case of pregnant women, the amount of hemoglobin in the blood should not be more or less.
A woman who is pregnant and will give birth is more likely to harm her unborn child than she is due to low or high levels of hemoglobin. First of all, there are various risks in childbirth. The child may be born prematurely and in that case there will be various problems in the child’s body. Also, low birth weight babies can be born. Therefore, all of us, including pregnant women, need to be careful about the amount of hemoglobin.
High label of hemoglobin
High levels of hemoglobin in the blood indicate a rare disease called polycythemia . The disease occurs when the level of hemoglobin increases. This is because the number of red blood cells is higher than normal. And in this case the blood of a human body is very thick.
High levels of hemoglobin give rise to another rare disease called Clots. Also high hemoglobin increases the chances of stroke and heart attack in many ways. If the level of hemoglobin in the blood is not reduced through proper treatment at the right time, it can lead to death in some cases.
The level of hemoglobin in the blood is higher than normal mainly due to dehydration. The next reason is excessive smoking. Also, lung and heart disease can increase the level of hemoglobin in the blood and cause a variety of other diseases, including heart attacks.
Low label of hemoglobin
Low levels of hemoglobin in the blood naturally indicate anemia. There are different types of anemia, such as-
– Iron deficiency anemia is the most common. This type of anemia occurs when a person does not have enough iron in his body. Anemia is usually caused by bleeding. However, this is mostly due to not eating enough iron-rich foods. In some patients, anemia occurs even after gastric bypass surgery.
– Iron deficiency is another type of anemia that is mainly related to pregnancy in women. And it also has a link to iron. In other words, pregnancy or childbirth demands a lot of iron for the body of women. If enough iron cannot be supplied then anemia will occur.
– Lack of adequate nutrition leads to lack of vitamin B12 or folic acid in the human body. Lack of it causes vitamin anemia. This type of anemia changes the shape of red blood cells which reduces the efficiency of the blood.
– Aplastic Anemia, Hemolytic Anemia, Sickle Cells Anemia, etc.
