Common eye infections

What is an eye infections?

 Eye infections are very common and a major cause of discomfort. Because of eye infections, we feel very uncomfortable. Bacteria, viruses and fungi are capable of creating eye infections, causing redness, swelling, itching, discharge and pain in the eyes.  One of the most common eye infections is conjunctivitis, which is usually a viral infection.

What are the main reasons for this?

  • The causes of eye infections vary with each infection and may include:
  • Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye): Conjunctivitis or infection of the transparent membrane on the inner layer of the eyelids is called conjunctivitis or pink eye.  Most cases of this infection are viral and heal on their own.  But if the infection is caused by bacteria, antibiotic eye drops will need to be used.
  • Blepharitis: This is inflammation of the eyelids, which can be caused by a bacterial infection.  This problem does not cause vision problems, but it can be very uncomfortable.
  • Iritis: It is an inflammation of the iris or colored part of the eye.  Ingestion can be caused by shingles virus.
  • Keratitis: Keratitis is a corneal infection.  The cornea is the pupil of the eye and the colored part of the eye or the transparent part covering the iris.  Infectious keratitis can be caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi.  It is a treatable disease, but if left untreated it can cause permanent loss of vision.
  • Endophthalmitis: Endophthalmitis is an infection caused inside the white part of the eye.  According to the American Society of Retinal Specialists, infectious endophthalmitis is an emergency and may require immediate surgery. 

How is an eye infection?

 One of the most common causes of eye infections is wearing contaminated contact lenses.  If you have bacteria in your contact lens or case, these harmful germs can spread to contact lenses.  Even if you always wear contact lenses, you can get eye infections, because overuse of contact lenses can lead to inflammation and inflammation.

 Your contact lenses can actually cause eye infections when exposed to contaminated water.  Swimming in contaminated swimming pools or bathing in contaminated water or washing contact lenses with contaminated water can develop eye infections.  Infections can also develop if bacteria or other harmful germs enter the eyes of those who do not wear contact lenses.  In fact, contact with people who have raised their eyes can actually cause this disease in you as well, because the disease that causes eye contact is contagious.

What are its main signs and symptoms?

 Signs and symptoms associated with common eye infections are:

 Conjunctivitis and blepharitis:

  • Swollen eyes.
  • Feeling pain in the eyes

 Bacterial keratitis:

  • Feeling pain in the eyes
  • Redness.
  • Wearing discharge.
  • Alzheimer’s disease.

  • Corneal ulcers.

 Herpes simplex virus keratitis:

  • Feeling pain in the eyes
  • Decreased vision and blurred vision.
  • Wearing tears.
  • Discharge.
  • Ulcers.
  • Itching.
  • Alzheimer’s disease.

 Endophthalmitis:

  • Feeling pain in the eyes
  • Decreased vision.
  • Redness.

 Whose eye infections are more?

People with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of any infection, such as an eye infection.  If you are addicted to tobacco, you have an increased risk of eye infections, research says.  If you use contact lenses, your risk of developing an infection is higher.  One of the reasons for red eyes is the use of contact lenses.  To reduce the risk, never sleep after contact lenses and wash contact lenses and cases regularly.  People who have eye injuries are also at higher risk of infection.

 How to treat eye infections?

The treatment depends on what type of infection you have.  If you have puffy eyes or pink eye, do not bother to seek treatment, as most of the pink eye is caused by the virus or allergies.  If the eyes are swollen due to bacteria, antibiotics will be needed.  If your doctor prescribes a topical antibiotic, it should be applied directly to the eye in drop or ointment form.  Sometimes oral antibiotics may be needed.  Your doctor may also prescribe steroid eye drops to relieve inflammation.  Regardless of the type of infection you have, your doctor may advise you not to use contact lenses during healing.  Disinfect the hard lens and replace it with a soft lens.

How is it diagnosed and treated?

 Eye infections are diagnosed based on medical details and careful physical examination.

 An ophthalmologist can examine your eyes using a slit-lamp microscope.

 Searches included:

 The practice of friction from the cornea or conjunctiva.

 The practice of discharge from the lower conjunctival cells or eyelids.

 Corneal biopsy.

 Treatment depends on the type, symptoms and severity of the infection.  Here are some common treatments for eye conditions:

 Your doctor may prescribe antiviral drops or gels for viral conjunctivitis.  Oral antibiotic agents will be needed for bacterial conjunctivitis.

 Chloramphenicol is the most commonly prescribed drug for bacterial keratitis.

 Herpes simplex keratitis is treated with oral antiviral agents and topical steroids.

 Endophthalmitis may require in vitral injection or intravenous (intravenous) injection with oral antibiotics.

 Treatment of angina with paracetamol or other analgesics (pain relievers) involves symptomatic relief.  Holding a warm cloth over your eyes for a few minutes helps reduce swelling.

 Your ophthalmologist (eye doctor) will advise you to avoid contact lenses until your infection is completely cured.

Some Eye care Tips

1.  Fruits and vegetables: Eat plenty of green vegetables, nuts, oranges as well as carrots to keep the eyes well.  Fresh vegetables are rich in antioxidants, vitamin A and vitamin C.  Which helps to keep the cornea of ​​the eye well.  It also protects against cataracts.

 2.  Omega-3 fatty acids: Omega-3 fatty acids keep the nerve cells of the eye healthy.  Protects the retina.  So to keep your eyes well, eat fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon, tuna, halibut.

 3.  Quit smoking: Excessive smoking harms the eyes.  There is also a possibility of retinal damage.  In addition, it damages the nerve cells in the eye.

 4.  Eye splashes: Give eye drops 10 to 15 times a day.  It keeps the eyes cold.  The eyes become moist and blood circulation increases.  However, do not give ice water or excessively hot water.

 5.  Adequate sleep: Adequate sleep every night results in good eyesight.  The eye muscles relax during sleep.  The eyes are also fresh.  Less sleep puts pressure on the eye muscles.  This can cause eye irritation.

6. Regular eye examinations: It is important to have regular eye examinations at least twice a year.  It rarely catches serious problems such as cataracts, glaucoma or retinal macular degeneration.

7.Drink Water: Doctors say that if you want to keep your eyes well, you need to drink plenty of water throughout the day.  Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water daily.  As a result, on the one hand, as the eyes will be clean and healthy, there will be no worries of dehydration.

8.Move Eyes from screen: You should not stare at the digital screen for a long time.  Occasionally move the eyes from the screen.  Keep your eyes off computer, mobile, TV screen for a while every 20 minutes.

 9. Use sunglass: Use UV protection sunglasses in the sun.  So that the intense heat of the sun does not catch the eye.
